I remain loyal to APC, says Bukola Saraki Posted: 18 Jul 2016 01:18 PM PDT Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Monday restated his loyalty to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC). Saraki also reiterated his belief that the President Buhari's government will redeem its electoral promises made during the 2015 general elections. The Senate President spoke at the 10th Abuja Housing Show where top government officials and prominent stakeholders in the housing sector brainstormed on the theme: "Expanding Access To Affordable Housing In Africa." Acknowledging the presence of the APC National Organizing Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso who earlier kick-started discussions at the summit, Saraki assured that the APC government is unwaveringly committed to the social welfare of the people while re-affirming his unalloyed loyalty to the party. "The Senate and the National Assembly as a whole believe very strongly that we must make a difference in the housing sector," he said. The Senate President, reacting to observations that the existing housing laws need respective amendment and repeal, charged the organizers of the Summit to take a further step by forwarding a document of laws requiring amendments to the National Assembly. "I assure you that action will be taken instantaneously," Saraki promised. Saraki asserted that the Senate has commenced the review processes of several laws affecting property rights and access housing in the country. According to him, the review of the National Housing Fund Act is on-going and would be completed before the end of the year. According to the APC National Organizing Secretary, Senator Izunaso, housing deficit in Nigeria is pegged at 17million housing units. "As at today, only 10 per cent of those who dream to own a house in the country can afford it, as against the 92 per cent house owners in Singapore. The central objective of the Summit, however, is to come up with feasible strategies on how to end the problem of homelessness in Nigeria," Izunaso said. Other personalities at the Summit include the representative of the Speaker of House of Reps, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Çakıl, TUC President, Comrade Bobboi Kaigama, among other investors. |

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 12:43 PM PDT The feud between Taylor Swift and Kanye/ Kim Kardashian is set to a take one step further as the 'Bad blood' singer has met her legal representatives and is considering taking legal action against Kanye West and his wife Kim after Kim released a bombshell phone recording that proved the rapper had asked the Shake It Off singer permission to release the controversial song Famous. In the track, Kanye raps: "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. I made that b**** famous." During the cordial phonecall Taylor, 26, appears to be supportive of the track, describing Kanye as a "friend" and saying the song is "like a compliment" and "obviously very tongue in cheek". But according to an exclusive report by the Sun UK, Taylor has consulted her legal representatives and plans to take legal action against Kanye and Kim K that could land them with 3 years imprisonment if they are charged, because in California where Kanye made the call from, it is illegal to record a phone conversation without the other person's knowledge and permission and make it public. Taylor's legal team is convinced Kanye and Kim have violated California penal code 632 that makes it illegal to record calls without permission from both sides. Taylor's lawyers earlier warned Kanye that she did not give consent to the recording and insisted she was not aware the call was being taped, warning him to destroy such recording, but the rapper's wife Kim released the video recording on Snapchat on Sunday. A source revealed: "Taylor's team believe that Kanye and Kim have quite clearly broken the law. "They are on a mission to destroy Taylor but there could be serious consequences because they made the phone call from California where it is illegal to tape calls without permission. "They didn't ask permission from Taylor and that could be considered a felony where the offenders can be jailed for up to three years." Taylor responded on Instagram saying: "You don't get to control someone's emotional response to being called 'that b****' in front of the entire world." "Where is the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me 'that bitch' in his song? It doesn't exist because it never happened." "Of course I wanted to like the song. I wanted to believe Kanye when he told me I would love the song. I wanted us to have a friendly relationship. He promised to play the song for me, but he never did. While I wanted to be supportive of Kanye on the phone call, you cannot 'approve' a song you haven't heard. "Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination. "I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009." |
Remi Tinubu applies for police protection, says Dino Melaye is a threat to her life Posted: 18 Jul 2016 12:47 PM PDT Senator Oluremi Tinubu has applied for police protection, following her issues with Dino Melaye. In a letter dated July 18 and received same date by the office of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, Mrs Tinubu said her life was no longer safe following her fight with Senator Melaye. The letter entitled: Request for Police Protection' reads: "I am Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing the Lagos Central Senatorial District of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. "During the proceedings of the Senate on Tuesday, July, 14, 2016, I had cause to contribute to a matter of national importance. Apparently dissatisfied with my contributions, Senator Dino Melaye threw caution to the winds, resorted to vulgar abuse of my person and wanted to assault me. "It was the timely intervention of a number of colleagues which prevented Senator Melaye from unleashing physical attack on me. However, as the leadership of the Senate did not call him to order in the circumstance, he proceeded to threaten my life without any provocation whatsoever. "In view of Senator Melaye's antecedent particularly in the House of Representatives where a brawl led to the untimely death of a member, I have decided not to ignore his threat to my life. Therefore, I'm compelled to urge you to use your good offices to provide me with adequate security. |

Scam Alert: EFCC on the trail of suspected ATM fraudster Akinade Tofunmi (photos) Posted: 18 Jul 2016 10:01 AM PDT The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday released a statement addressing the rise of identity theft in Nigeria. Photos of a suspected female fraudster on the run was also shared. Read below. The much talked about ATM fraudsters are not resting on the oars. They are all over the place laying siege to any susceptible victim. These criminals go about fleecing unwary members of the public with their ingenious, ever-changing modes of operations. The latest being the infamous identity theft. Before now, cloning and PIN harvesting through electronic chips cleverly concealed in the Automated Teller Machine (ATM), was the universal mode. Over time, the tricks and decoys to entrap their victims keep changing and have assumed a disturbing dimension. The Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is on the trail of a suspected ATM fraudster, who goes by the name Akinade Tofunmi. Her trade in stock is identity theft. Her duty post is any ATM Point and Point of Sales (POS) machines across the country. However, she does not 'work' during the official hours of the week rather; she operates late in the night when all bank transactions had closed and preferably over the weekend when her 'prospective' victims might not be able to alert the banks for any unauthorised transaction. In her last operation, within twenty four hours; this fraudster who operates with the identity of her victims succeeded to have raked in about three million (N3m) within 24 hours. Dateline was Friday, June 3rd, 2016, at about the close of work. A woman simply identified as Alhaja and her husband who was waiting in the car wanted to use an ATM somewhere in Ibadan, Oyo State, when Tofunmi noticed that the woman limps. Pretending to be polite and cultured, she offered to assist her with the transaction on the ATM. Unaware of the intention behind the pious approach, she gave the fraudster her ATM card and divulged her PIN. Smartly, the fraudster quickly checked the balance in the account which had one million, seven hundred and forty nine thousand, twenty six naira and seven kobo (N1, 749, 026. 07). After the intended withdrawal of N20, 000:00, the fraudster swapped the card and gave Alhaja a fake ATM card. Oblivious of the swap, she left with her husband. Shortly before midnight, the fraudster started the 'harvest' of her booty. She withdrew one hundred and thirty thousand naira. Having exceeded the daily withdrawing limit for that day, she waited for a few minutes to the following day which was a Saturday. Shortly after midnight, she made another rounds of withdrawals to the tune of one hundred and fifty thousand naira which was also the daily limit for that day. However, Alhaja and her husband had no one to run or call that night to save the situation when the debit alerts start coming in torrent. In a desperate need of where and how to empty the balance in the account, she went to a night club where she met a motorcycle transporter, popularly known as Okada whom she approached for a help. Her decoy was that she had enough money in her account but could not access it having exceeded her daily withdrawal limit. She showed the bike man her balance and pleaded with him to give her his ATM card, account details and PIN for a quick teller transfer from her (Alhaja's) account to the bike man's account. With that, she has been able to secure some of Alhaja's money in the bike man's account thereby stealing the identity of the unsuspecting bike man. At the early hours of that Saturday morning, she asked the bike man to take her to a hotel with an intention to further steal the identity of the hotelier for another movement of the money. At the hotel reception while paying for her accommodation which was N10, 000 (Ten thousand naira) for one night, she deliberated credited the hotel's account with one hundred and one thousand naira (N101, 000) feigning a mistake and demanded a refund of ninety-one thousand naira (N91, 000) balance of an overpayment. This was also done with Alhaja's ATM card through the POS machine at the Hotel. To further conceal her identity, she provided fake personal details in the hotel and gave the hotel the bike man's account detail when the hotel management requested for an account to deposit the refund. All these happened on Saturday; hence, Alhaja and her husband are still in dilemma with no help in sight to stop the transactions in the account. By Sunday, Alhaja's money had moved to the fraudster both in cash and through transfer to the bike man account domicile in the same bank. All these while, the fraudster was in possession of both Alhaja the first victim and the bike man, the second victim's ATM cards. Later the following day, Monday, the bike man could no longer reach the fraudster on phone; he (the bike man) then went to the bank to request for another ATM card. It was later discovered in the bank that part of Alhaja's money was transferred to the bike man's account. He was arrested by the bank and He's now helping the EFCC operatives to track down the fraudster. Investigations have revealed that this same fraudster had stolen the identities of other victims earlier and had absconded to, Ilorin, Kwara State. Instances of Tofunmi's nefarious activities have also been spotted in other parts of the country particularly Port Harcourt City. The Commission is hereby seeking the cooperation and support of public spirited members of the society to please help unveil the identity of this fraudster. Her face, though with different disguises, is on display for anyone who knows her to please contact any of our offices across the six geopolitical zones and Abuja. She must be apprehended, who knows the next victim? Besides, it is imperative to reiterate the need to be careful with our ATM cards and PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (PIN). On no account should we divulge any information about our account details to anyone. The criminals, ATM fraudsters are on the loose, taking advantage of people's insensitivity and carelessness. Pictures show Akinade Tofunmi as captured by CCTV Of the bank and Hotel she operated from. |

Kidnapping: Lagos places security agencies on red alert ...Partners FG, Ogun State on border patrol Posted: 18 Jul 2016 09:54 AM PDT Assures residents of safety of lives, property. The Lagos State Government on Monday assured residents of the State that it was working hard in conjunction with security agencies to address the recent cases of kidnapping and armed robberies in some parts of the State, just as it disclosed that security intelligence has revealed useful leads towards identifying notorious syndicates behind the heinous crimes and their accomplices. In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, the State Government said it is alive to its core responsibilities of protecting the citizens as the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode will not shirk from its function of protecting the lives and property of its citizens in every part of the state. The government, while reassuring citizens of their safety in the State, said it was collaborating with security agencies to put in place upgraded security measures that will guarantee safety of lives and property. "We would like to inform Lagosians that we are saddened by the recent cases of kidnappings that appear not to be unrelenting. But we wish to assure that the government will not fold its arms and allow a few evil doers to prosper at the expense of innocent citizens. "We are working together with both Federal Government and Ogun State Government in particular in the volatile areas that have been identified. We will spare no effort in bringing every criminal gang to book," the SSG said.According to Bello, the response of the State Government "Will be swift, total and reassuring to the public in sending a clear signal to all and sundry that Lagos State will not tolerate any form of criminality."While sympathizing with the families of victims in Iba and Ikorodu, the Secretary to the State Government urged residents of the state to go about their normal businesses without any fear or panic as government has placed security personnel on red alert throughout the State in a bid to checkmate this menace. He advised Lagosians to be very vigilant and security conscious as intelligence reports have shown that most of these heinous crimes are perpetrated through recalcitrant elements who have infiltrated the state and are carrying out this act in conjunction with friends, family members or close associates of the victims. Bello reiterated the commitment and capacity of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration to go after and suppress any act of crime and criminality in any part of the State, urging residents to take advantage of the state's toll free lines: 112 and 767 to report any case of crime or unusual/suspicious movement or strange faces in their neighbourhood to security agencies. While also noting the recent massive security equipment and vehicles donated by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration to security agencies to beef up security in the state which has considerably curbed armed robbery cases, Bello said the State Government in consonance with the Police and other security agencies in the State will continue to do all within its means to halt the trend of kidnapping in the State and bring perpetrators to justice. Pregnant woman rejects breast cancer treatment to save her unborn baby Posted: 18 Jul 2016 09:52 AM PDT A pregnant woman diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer accepted death so that her baby could live. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien from Duc Pho District in Quang Ngai Province turned down chemotherapy which would have meant giving up her unborn baby. Hien and her husband got married Nguyen Tan Thanh 18 years ago. The young couple later left their hometown in search of treatment for their infertility in the central coastal city of Quy Nhon. Hien and Thanh gave up after multiple unsuccessful in vitro fertilization attempts they could barely afford. Hien was admitted to hospital after she slipped while delivering noodles to diners where she worked. Doctors diagnosed her with stage-three breast cancer and announced her pregnancy during that same hospital admission. Hien's only hope of saving her life was to have her breasts removed and to give up her unborn baby and undergo chemotherapy. But she refused instead begged to save her baby, even if it meant death on her part. Hien became paralyzed after the sixth month of her pregnancy and at 8 months, afraid that she might not make it as she was becoming weaker by the day, the sacrificing mother asked to have her baby delivered through C-section. The child weighed a mere 1.8 kilograms was born in the utmost happiness of the mother. After she recovered from the hour-long operation, the first thing Hien did was fumble for her baby, saying in tears, "I do want to live like everybody else, but I can't lose my child, for I wouldn't be able to live if I did. The only thing I regret is not being able to breastfeed my baby, as my breasts have already been removed. " she said |

Mohamed Lahouaiyei Bouhlel, 31, was shot dead in the cabin of the lorry he had driven into the packed crowd celebrating Bastille Day. According to French media, Bouhlel's mobile phone records shows how he used dating websites to meet men and women, including a 73-year-old man. The phone was picked up by police officers at the scene from the lorry's cabin after he was shot dead. Police say the phone is proving more important to the investigation than the seven suspects in custody for their links to Bouhlel. Investigators could not confirm the Tunisian-native was approached by an Algerian Isis recruiter, stating the case was ongoing. Bouhlel's uncle, Sadok Bouhlel, has told reporters that the Algerian recruiter found in Mohamed an easy prey for recruitment because he was estranged from his wife and three children, adding that he learned about the Algerian recruiter from extended family members who live in Nice. Idris is a big liar, I didn't steal police vehicles - ex-IGP Arase Posted: 18 Jul 2016 08:36 AM PDT A former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase on Monday in Abuja described as lies the allegation by his successor,Ibrahim Idris that he took away 24 police vehicles. According to him, Idris should cross check his handover notes which contains every information needed by his successor on vehicles bought by the police. The ex-IGP in a statement issued from London, United Kingdom, United Kingdom, where he went for his son's graduation. also denied getting any letter from Idris since he has been out of the country. According to him, all vehicles bought by the police under him were distributed to the state commands and other appropriate units of the Nigeria Police Force. The statement reads: "I suspect there must be a disconnect somewhere because every information needed by my successor are provided in my hand-over notes. I'm also not aware that any letter was written to me because if there was any dropped in my house, someone would have alerted me. "It's unfortunate that this matter is being made a media issue because my successor has my telephone number and could have called me for any clarification or even sent me a text message rather than addressing the media on an issue well documented in my hand-over notes."Idris had claimed that Arase went away with 24 police vehicles while the seven Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, who retired alongside him, also carted away between seven and eight cars each. Idris said that he had written Arase to return the cars, which included two official bullet-proof BMW 7 series cars, adding that the retired police chief and his DIGs had yet to return the vehicles. He had explained that a special investigation team was already looking at the records of police vehicle purchases in the last three years as well as how they were distributed. Idris had said, "If you look through the windows of my former office and from the report from my (Force) transport officer, you would see cars but a week to the day I would resume, all these cars disappeared. |
