Kano Mass Wedding: "Our priority shouldn't be facilitating mass marriages" Sen. Ben Bruce

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 12:39 PM PDT

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has reacted to the news of upcoming mass wedding in Kano State. About 10,000 Muslims women have so far registered for the ceremony, which is organised by the Hizba board in a bid to reduce the number of single women in the state.
"Really sad that in this period of economic downturn some states are more engaged with mass wedding registries rather than with mass job registries! 18,000 babies are born in Nigeria everyday.
States are seeking bailouts from the FG, businesses are closing up shop and the Naira is sliding everyday with high inflation and our priority is mass marriage! Really!!! Our priority shouldn't be facilitating mass marriages. It should be how to make our people productive enough to marry for themselves and feed their families"he wrote
The Hizba board is yet to announce a date for the ceremony.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says Hillary Clinton is to blame for BH's kidnapping Of Chibok schoolgirls

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 12:31 PM PDT

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie suggested during a speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, was to blame for the kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls in Chibok by extremist group, Boko Haram.

According to him, by not adding Boko Haram to the terrorist watch list, every region of the world has been infected with her flawed judgment. Also referencing the #BringBackOurGirls campaign that drew attention from all over the world, he said,

"What happened because of this reckless action by the candidate who is the self-proclaimed champion of women around the world? These terrorists abducted hundreds of innocent young girls two years ago. These schoolgirls are still missing today. What was the solution from the Obama/Clinton team? A hashtag campaign!"

Footballer Demba Ba says he will not retire and reveals he's yet to have full operation after horrific leg break

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 09:20 AM PDT

Demba Ba has confirmed he does not plan to retire from football, despite suffering a horrific leg break. The 31-year-old who now plays for Chinese Super League side, Shanghai Shenhua, fractured his left tibia on Sunday, after a tangle with Shanghai SIPG defender, Sun Xiang.

After the match, the Senegal forward's coach Gregorio Manzano said the injury "could end his professional career".

Speaking to Radio Monte Carlo from his hospital bed in Shanghai, China, former Chelsea player Demba Ba said:
"This is a really bad injury but I know I can overcome it. I won't call time on my career, that's for sure. They haven't done the full operation because I told them to wait. I wanted to go to Europe to have it done but when I learned that was not possible I arranged with the doctor here to sort me out a French surgeon who should arrive shortly. He will operate on me."
"There are other players who have returned from similar injuries, like Hatem Ben Arfa," he added. "Something similar happened to me earlier in my career and the treatment options are much better now. I think I'll make a speedier return this time.
"The season here ends in November and the new one starts in March. I'll do my best to return in time for the season after that."

DSS arrests Zamfara speaker, his deputy, 2 other lawmakers over plot to impeach Governor Yari

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 09:09 AM PDT

20 lawmakers have reportedly fled to Kaduna following the arrest of the speaker of   Zamfara State House of Assembly, Alhaji Sanusi Garba Rikiji, his deputy, Muhammad Abubakar Gumi, the majority leader, Isah Abdulmumini and the chief whip, Abdullahi Dansadau by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) over their alleged plan to impeach Governor Abdulaziz Yari.

According to Daily Trust, the fleeing members of the Assembly issued a statement, last night, calling on President Buhari to intervene in what they term abuse of office by Governor Yari.

Governor Yari is being accused of misappropriating financial allocation to the state, and failing  to implement the budget in the last five years. The statement, which was signed by the House Committee Chairman on Information, Mannir Aliyu Gidan Jaja, also accused the governor of corrupt usage of local government funds for state purposes.

Other charges  levelled against the governor include "Inadequate explanation of N1 billion commercial agriculture (CBN) loan, non-remittance of pension funds to pension administrators,  non-remittance of 5 percent emirate councils funds, the gross misappropriation of bailout funds to the state by the federal government to settle workers' salaries, including N10b for 2014 and N1.46b in 2016."

The lawmakers also accused Yari of crippling governance in the state through his constant travelling abroad and instead of addressing the issues, he "resorted to political intimidation, arrest and detention of principal officers of the House and other supporting staff."

Zamfara State Police Commissioner, Mr Istifanus Shattima, disclosed that he has deployed additional operatives to stop mobs from disrupting normal activities at the House of Assembly.

Shattima told Daily Trust that deployment of troops to the Assembly was in response to the action of a mob which attacked the private residence of the speaker.

The speaker's residence was attacked by mobs after rumours circulated in the state and the social media, that the lawmakers were planning to impeach Governor Yari.

Brussels Police and bomb disposal teams carried out a major operation after a man was seen wearing a long coat with wires hanging out on Wednesday in Belgium capital. It is +32C in Brussels at the moment so the winter coat grabbed security guards' attention.

Photo: 58 year old woman narrates how Boko Haram members forced her to watch them behead her son in Borno

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 09:05 AM PDT

58 year old Jummai Ibrahim,pictured above, who now takes refuge at an IDP camp in Borno state, recently told the heart wrenching story of how Boko Haram terrorists stormed her village in Doro-Baga and forced her to watch as they beheaded her 21 year old son. Speaking to Premium Times, Jummai said;

"I lost many of my relatives while fleeing from Baga. Immediately we made it to the outskirts of Baga, Boko Haram gunmen intercepted us and took away one of my daughters who was two months pregnant and her three-year-old son and 13 other ladies who were either my cousins or my husband's younger ones that were living with us. One of my sons, Habibu, who was about 21 years old was killed by Boko Haram. When they saw him with me, one of the Boko Haram gunmen told me that 'Mama this your son is old enough to join the Civilian-JTF, so he is assumed to be a potential member of the Civilian-JTF'. For that reason they dragged him to the ground in my presence and slit his throat. They wanted to force me to hold his legs while they were cutting off his neck, and I told them I could not do such thing. I attempted to close my eyes because I could not stand to see how they were killing my own son like an animal, but one of them hit me with the butt of their gun on my arm, and insisted that I must watch them as they killed my son. I watched him cry and calling on me to help him, when I cried out that I could not help him, then he kept on screaming that 'mama pray for me, and forgive me if I ever offended you, pray for me'…(sobs)…that was how my child was slaughtered and beheaded," Jummai narrated, weeping. "I have seen pains and torture from Baga to Maiduguri."she said
Jummai says she used to be a fish merchant when she was in Doro-Baga but she lost all to the attacks of the insurgents
"Now I am left with nothing except rags. Last year, Borno State government came to share clothes for us and that was what we have been using since then. As you can see now, the clothes have turned to rags because of everyday use. Look at my body, look at our skins, we lack soaps to bathe and even the cheapest cream to oil our body. We do not even have washing bar to wash our clothes. It is so pathetic. It is even more pathetic now that I have over 20 children including some of my own that were able to make it on their own to this camp and those of neighbours that have been killed, all living with me in the same apartment here in the camp. Food that was recently distributed by the Borno state governor during this Ramadan did not get to us in our own house. We have to depend on one or two measures of rice that some good relatives brought to us. Just imagine the irony of life…(sobs)… me a woman of means in Baga, whom people do come to meet for help; even when the local government council was in difficulties, they do come to me for assistance which I did render without blinking an eyelid. I was a very independent woman financially. I was very famous and prominent in my community; none of our Lawans (District Head) and Bulamas (village heads) would say they don't know me"she said

#internssowhite: Photos of Republican and Democrats interns spawn a hashtag on Twitter

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 08:45 AM PDT

While the House Democrats chairman Xavier Becerra posted pictures of their Capitol Hill interns, showcasing the ethnic diversity among the group, House speaker Paul Ryan posted a photo with a group of mostly white young men and women who were doing internships in Washington DC.

"I think this sets a record for the most number of #CapitolHill interns in a single selfie," Mr Ryan captioned the photo which raised questions about the procurement of interns and the ethnic diversity within the Republican Party.

When compared together, the pictures of democratic interns at Capitol Hill showed many faces of colour. Social media users were not impressed with the ethnic diversity of the Republican group. The picture quickly spawned a hashtag on Twitter - #internssowhite.
"So much diversity. Look at all those different hair colors," a twitter user commented. "Not even one African-American"
"The picture of Paul Ryan with GOP interns is so white that I had to put on my glasses to look directly at it" another wrote.

14-year-old pregnant girl burnt to death by in-laws in Afghanistan after two years of abuse

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 07:23 AM PDT

A 14-year-old pregnant girl was burnt to death by her in-laws in a remote area of central Ghor province, central Afghanistan. This is the latest reported case of violence against women in the country.
"She was a victim of family violence," said General Mustafa Andarabi, the Police Chief of Ghor province. Zahra's husband was involved in the incident, he added.  He fled the house. However, we have Zahra's father in-law and mother in-law in custody," Andarabi said.

Her 45-year-old father, Mohammed Azam said that he came to the capital, Kabul, to seek justice for his daughter Zarah. He told The Associated Press that she was tortured and set on fire by her husband's family last week. She died in a Kabul burns hospital on Saturday, July 16. Mohammad Saber Nasib, a physician said she suffered third-degree burns, down to the muscles and bones.

Azam said Zarah's killing was in revenge after he had eloped two years ago with a young cousin of his daughter's husband. According to him, his daughter's in-laws had struck a marriage deal with him, letting him marry the cousin in payment for a debt they owed him for construction work. But they later reneged on the deal, he said, after promising the cousin to another man for more money.
Azam said he had no hope for justice in lawless Ghor.
"The culprits should be brought to justice, my daughter's blood must not go in vain," he said.
Ruqia Naiel, a senator from Ghor province, said that Zahra's father complained to the provincial judiciary about his daughter being ill-treated in her husband's house, but no one listened to him.

The girl had been married when she was 12 and had been ill-treated since." she said.

The practice of trading young women to pay debts (baad) is illegal in Afghanistan, and Azam himself could face prosecution for engaging in the practice.

On Monday, about 50 people, including Azam, members of his family and women's rights activists, rallied in western Kabul, calling for justice. Women's rights activist Veeda Saghari, who attended the demonstration, said violence against women is largely ignored by Afghanistan's judicial sector.
"That is why all kinds of violence against women such as acid throwing, beating, stoning, informal community tribunal verdicts, burning, forced divorces, forced marriages, forced pregnancies, forced abortions have reached a peak," she said.
Afghanistan faces serious human rights issues, including physical and sexual violence against women and so-called honor killings that often involve immolation.
