Buhari should stop acting like grandfather of corruption – Fayose

Posted: 17 Jul 2016 01:36 PM PDT

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has urged President Mohammadu Buhari to stop acting like the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria by shielding his men from probe, just as he asked Nigerians to demand the release of the authentic report of the Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He described claim by the federal government that the probe panel only looked into procurement and contracts awarded by the military between 2011-2015 because documents regarding procurement from 2007 to 2010 were not available as a clear indication of his support for corruption.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said "it is now obvious to the entire world that anyone that is in President Buhari's good books can never be adjudged as corrupt even if such a person is caught looting the entire money in Nigeria's treasury."

The governor said it smacked of sheer hypocrisy and nepotism for anyone to accept that fraud could have been perpetrated on procurement and award of contracts in an establishment without the involvement of the director of procurement.

"There are many petitions relating to the defence from 2007 that are been discarded, the question is why? There are several petitions against APC leaders that are not being looked into, the question is why?

"Fghting corruption and targeting only opponents of the president is in itself corruption," he said.

He said; "Buhari's' Minister of Interior, Major General Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) was Chief of Army Staff between 2008 and 2010 and the current Chief Of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai served as Director of Procurements, Defence Headquarters, from 2012 till May 2015.

"It is a fact that the committee in its terms of reference said it queried all procurement from 2007 to 2015. Even the Press Release issued was titled; 'Third Interim Report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement from 2007 to 2015.'

"First paragraph of the committee report also indicated that it used 2007-2015 as reference, stating that the committee 'analysed procurement contracts awarded by or for the Nigerian Army between 2007 and 2015.'

"Questions Nigerians must now begin to ask President Buhari and his government are; where is the report of Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement relating to 2007 to 2010? Who doctored the committee report and why?

"Lai Mohammed said the Committee would commence the audit of procurement from 2007 to 2010 'as soon as the necessary documents are available', it is necessary that Nigerians are told who the custodians of the documents are. Why were documents on procurement from 2011 and 2015 available and those of 2007 to 2010 not available?

"Early this year, we were told that an ally of President Buhari and chieftain of the APC, Brig. General Jafaru Isa (rtd) refunded N100 million of the N170 million he allegedly received from ex-NSA, Sambo Dasuki.

"Jafaru Isa who was a member of the 19-man Buhari Transition Committee was released after he was allegedly assisted by the Presidency to refund N100 million to the anti-graft commission and since then, nothing has been heard about the case. He was not charged to court like others.

"It took the Ministry of Defence and the Code of Conduct Bureau only one week to clear Buratai but others from the opposition party would be languishing in prison while EFCC go about fishing for evidence against them.

"Like I and other well-meaning Nigerians have maintained, fighting corruption is a good idea but the moment documents of probe panels and being doctored to shield those seen as the President's men, the entire purpose of the corruption fight has been defeated.

"The international community must therefore prevail on President Buhari to stop acting like the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria by making the anti-corruption war all-inclusive instead of this clear persecution of his perceived political enemies, and the first step to demonstrate that will be the immediate release of report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement covering 2007 to 2015."

Former Nigerian rugby player jailed for assaulting and robbing a taxi driver in Dublin, Ireland

Posted: 17 Jul 2016 03:39 AM PDT

20-year-old Nigerian former rugby player who beat up and robbed a taxi driver to avoid paying a fare was on Monday July 11, sentenced to nine months in prison.

Sachi Buti, who was born in Nigeria but came to Ireland at the age of eight, pleaded guilty to the robbery of Joseph Saji at St Michael's Estate, Inchicore on the night of August 23rd, 2014.
His mother, who supported her son in the Dublin Circuit Court said she was extremely shocked and appalled at his actions. Buti began his career with Leinster rugby at the age of 14 and played with the under-15 team. He went on to play for Blackrock, Liberty Saints and Guinness Rugby Club.

Judge Catherine Murphy said she was jailing Sashi Buti with "great reluctance" after he failed to engage fully with probation and restorative justice services and failed a drugs test.

Buti was caught because he left his passport behind in the taxi. He had flagged down the taxi on the Naas Road and got into the front passenger seat. Another man with Buti got into the back seat. They told the driver to take them to St Michael's estate, which Garda Costello described as a derelict site with no CCTV cameras.

Once there, the other man put his arm around the driver's neck and Buti started hitting him. Buti then sat up on the driver while the men robbed his iPhone, SatNav device and €220 in cash. Shortly after getting out of the car, Buti realised he had left his passport, mobile phone and a necklace in the taxi. He went back to the car but the driver had locked the doors. Buti later reported his passport was lost.

The driver suffered swelling as a result of the attack. None of the stolen items were recovered and he stopped picking up passengers on the street, which had resulted in a loss of income, the court heard.

In his defence, Buti's lawyer Fiona Pecker told the court her client was drunk on the night. She said he claimed not to know the other man but that the other man had suggested that they both "do a runner" on a taxi as Buti had no money to get home after a night out.

Sentencing him to nine months' imprisonment, Judge Murphy said Buti had been given "every opportunity"  by the court to improve his situation. She said he had failed to provide evidence that he completed a course at College and that an employer reference he supplied from a valet car parking company was an "insult to the court" as it was not signed, had no letterhead and "could have been prepared by a child of 15".

Buti attended only four out of seven probation service conferences and failed to complete an anger awareness course as part of the restorative justice programme, he also failed to provide any compensation to his victim and he also tested positive for cocaine and speed. Buti apologised to the court, saying:

"I know you've given me so many chances. I 'm an idiot to take drugs."

Judge Murphy said she hoped Buti would use his period of incarceration to turn his life around.

"You've got too much potential and too much ability to waste any more time in custody." she concluded.

Story of 17-year-old Nigerian girl who was tricked into prostitution in Russia then abandoned when she fell sick

Posted: 17 Jul 2016 03:21 AM PDT

Anti-Trafficking activists were recently honoured in Washington, D.C. at an event marking the release of the State Department's 2016 Trafficking in Persons report.

The U.S. State Department's Anti-Trafficking Heroes came from very different corners of the world: Nigeria, Cyprus, Pakistan, Russia, Senegal and they all carry same thing in their pocket or purse: photos of the victims they had rescued from human trafficking, stored in their mobile phones.
Goats and Soda spoke to some of the honorees at NPR's headquarters, including a Nigerian activist Oluremi Kehinde, who each shared a story about a trafficked victim they have rescued. They 've been asked not to give the full names of the trafficking victims to protect their identities.

Oluremi Kehinde works with Africans who have been trafficked for sex work in Russia. He shared a photo of an 18-year-old Nigerian girl brought to Russia with what she thought was a student visa, then forced into prostitution.(pictured showing a photo of the Nigerian teen forced to work as a prostitute in Russia. She was hospitalized because of internal injuries) Below is his story:

"Victims brought for prostitution have their passports taken away from them. She would have to work to pay up the $50,000 to $60,000 [to her captors] before she could earn back her freedom. This girl only paid $15,000, so she was locked up in an apartment where she had to serve customers. Many victims are threatened that if they run away, their family in Nigeria would have to pay up — or be harmed.

In the process of working as a prostitute, she had to have anal intercourse with men. Many times, if the victims refuse, they are humiliated, beaten up, some are even thrown out a window or killed. So most victims agree. The girl's large intestine became twisted and blocked. She could not go to the toilet and became weak with a serious stomachache. She was dying. But the traffickers didn't help her.

I found out about this case and I got the police involved. We got her out of there and into the hospital for surgery. She was crying, "I don't want to die, I don't want to die."
Four weeks ago, we returned her to Nigeria and [we are now] working to arrest the people who brought her to Russia. She is better now, with her parents.

"I have no regrets for killing her" says brother of Pakistani social media star Qandeel Baloch

Posted: 17 Jul 2016 03:00 AM PDT

The brother of Qandeel Baloch, whose risqué social media posts angered conservative Pakistan, on Sunday, July 17, admitted to killing her for the family's 'honour'

Muhammad Waseem, who was arrested late on Saturday, said he gave a "tablet" to Baloch to subdue her and then strangled her in their family home over the weekend.

"I have no regrets," he told journalists in a press conference arranged by the police early on Sunday.

"The police arrested Muhammad Waseem, brother of Qandeel Baloch, for killing his sister late on Saturday," Multan City police chief Azhar Akram told AFP. "Waseem confessed to his crime, saying he killed his sister for honour after her recent objectionable videos, mostly posted on Facebook."

The killing sent shock waves across Muslim Pakistan and triggered an outpouring of grief on social media for Baloch, whose real name was Fauzia Azeem.

In Facebook posts, Baloch, 26, spoke of trying to change "the typical orthodox mindset" of people in Pakistan. She faced frequent misogynist abuse and death threats but continued to post provocative pictures and videos.
