Court grants Ali Modu Sheriff's request, stops PDP convention Posted: 28 Jul 2016 12:59 PM PDT Justice Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja has stopped the planned National Convention of PDP slated for August 17th in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. Delivering judgement in a suit filed by Ali Modu Sheriff, Justice Abang ruled that the May 21st convention of the party that sacked Sheriff from office was illegal and that the caretaker committee raised by the party during that convention was unlawfully constituted. "The convention was unlawfully held and the caretaker committee was unlawfully constituted. If the Markarfi-led faction, as an apostle of impunity, missed its way to the Port Harcourt division of the FHC, the court cannot be said to have acted within its legal jurisdiction in entertaining the matter,"the judge said PDP had planned to elect members into its key positions during the proposed August 17th convention. |
Mikel Obi denies making $30,000 donation to Olympic squad Posted: 28 Jul 2016 12:55 PM PDT John Mikel Obi has denied media reports making the rounds in Nigeria that he gave 30,000 dollars to his team –mates in the U23 team presently camping in Atlanta, USA. Speaking from the team's camp at the Hyatt Place, the Captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics was furious:
Wondering why the writer thinks that the players are hungry that needed his money, Mikel asked: "Tell me the players who are in this team that are so hungry that will be looking up to me for survival? Is it (William) Ekong, (Oghenekaro) Etebo, (Shehu) Abdulahi, (Daniel) Akpeyi, (Kingsley) Madu, (Okechukwu) Azubuike or (Stanley) Amuzie, who are my team –mates in the Super Eagles, that I will be donating to, or other players who are plying their trade abroad and are doing well for themselves? To me, this is just mere distraction that won't help this team going into a major tournament like the Olympics." |

We are making genuine efforts to correct our lapses as a nation - President Buhari Posted: 28 Jul 2016 12:35 PM PDT Read the press statement from Femi Adeshina below... President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that lapses that have characterized Nigeria as a nation would be corrected. Receiving a team led by Dr. Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer of Gavi and The Global Fund in State House, Abuja, on Thursday, President Buhari said he was impressed with the patience and steadfastness of leading supporters of health care in Nigeria, "despite our shortcomings as a nation." "We are making genuine efforts to correct the lapses. We are very serious about people behaving themselves, and being accountable," the President said. "We thank you for deciding to re-engage with us, despite our inefficiencies. You decided to be here, not minding our shortcomings. There are other countries that would bring less problems. We appreciate your commitment, and we will do our best to put ourselves in the best shape to help us," President Buhari said. Dr Berkley, who noted that the three focal points of the Buhari administration; security, economic development, and anti-corruption were critical to the future of Nigeria, had raised issues over the way donor funds for health care were utilized in the past. He said Gavi and the Global Fund were disappointed when forensic audit revealed systemic weaknesses and corruption in the utilization of funds given in the past, adding that there is now a "breath of fresh air" under President Buhari's leadership and fight against corruption and they were willing to "close the books of the past, and look into future support." Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, who was also at the event, disclosed that those indicted in the audit of the donor funds in the past, which was done between 2010 and 2015, had already been questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and would be arraigned in court soon. Oh no! Mary J Blige files for divorce from husband after 12 years of marriage Posted: 28 Jul 2016 12:12 PM PDT After 12 years of marriage, singer Mary J. Blige has filed for divorce from her husband and manager, producer Martin "Kendu" Isaacs, TMZ reports. Blige has claimed irreconcilable differences and plans to move forward with a legal split from Kendu. Blige has also asked a judge to block Isaacs from requesting or obtaining spousal support after the divorce. The couple does not have any children together. Blige and Isaacs were married on December 7, 2003 in a private ceremony. In 2014, Blige talked about the challenges of dating her manager during an interview with Stella Magazine. "He always has my back -- he's going to fight to the death for Mary J Blige. The downside is that there's no separation -- it's on all the time. When you don't feel like answering to your manager, he's still your husband. If one of you doesn't want to talk about something right now, you have to respect that. And you have to respect each other's space." Blige also famously banned Isaacs from having friendships with other women. "All females for me, all guys for him. There's none of that, 'Oh, that's my female friend. Oh, that's my guy friend.' No. Not in a marriage, I've never seen that work." |

Posted: 28 Jul 2016 09:07 AM PDT So a few hours ago, LIB reported that people involved in raising money for cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed, reached out to us to say that they discovered that the whole fundraising for the sick lady was a scam. I've been in touch with quite a few people, and they insist the family knew Mayowa was beyond help but still went ahead to raise money for her. Mayowa's family have released a statement insisting it's no scam and that they are truly taking her abroad for medical treatment. (Now, it's supposedly tomorrow). In their new statement this afternoon, they said they are taking her to a hospital in Abu Dhabi but when they started raising money for her, they said they wanted to take her to Emory hospital, Atlanta, who had given them a quote of $100k. You will find the letter from Emory Hospital after the cut. (Above are photos of Toyin Aimakhu crying at the station) Mayowa's family did indeed contact Emory Hospital, Atlanta to make inquiries and they were told that they would make an initial deposit of $100k after which it would cost them between $3,000-$30,000 per session, and a patient requires between 10-50 treatments. Below is what they put out initially said, treatment at Emory Hospital in New York. But as of today, there's no letter from Emory Hospital inviting her over. Mayowa does not have a US Visa and the cancer has even spread to her liver. Some of Mayowa's family members are being detained at Area D in Mushin while they investigate the allegations. The person I feel most sorry for in all this is Mayowa herself. She doesn't deserve all this on top of fighting for her life. Sad! This is a statement from the family... Videos at the station |

Photos/Video: 7-year-old girl visting a Zoo dies after Elephant hurls a huge stone at her head Posted: 28 Jul 2016 08:24 AM PDT A seven-year-old school girl recently died at a zoo in Morocco after being struck on the head by a huge rock hurled at her by an elephant. The girl's dad had lifted her up on his shoulders outside the elephant enclosure so her mum could take a snap of the two of them with their back to the animals when she was struck. The female elephant, named Assia, picked up a large stone in its trunk, threw it into the air and it hit the little girl on the back of her head. She was knocked unconscious and later died in a nearby hospital after failing to overcome her injuries. A zoo spokesman offered his condolences to the girl's family but said there had been no security breaches and she had not crossed into a protective area outside the enclosure. He said, "Accidents of this type are rare, unforeseeable and unusual." |

Posted: 28 Jul 2016 07:15 AM PDT Sixteen South African girls, drugged and used as sex slaves for up to nine months, have been rescued from a human trafficking ring ran by Nigerians, in a three bedroom house in Kempton Park, in Ekurhuleni, South Africa on July 15, 2016. The girls told officers they endured sexual abuse at the hands of hundreds of men, the youngest just 15-years-old. Some were kidnapped and others lured with a promise of jobs. "The 15 year old girl was saying to me she was brought here by Nigerians – two weeks back and they promised her they were going to give her a job – that's how she got here. She even said she doesn't know the place, she is just caught up here," said Gauteng police commissioner Major General Suzan de Lange. "The other one said she was brought here by a friend and another said she was kidnaped. Most of them the whole story is that they were promised a job." she added.Inside the house, new and used condoms were strewn across the floors. The filthy bedrooms had more than one bed and there was a mattress in a corner in the kitchen. The young women told Hawks and South African Police Service (SAPS) officers that they were abused, drugged and starved. They say they were forced to sleep with over 15 men a day each and the clients would pay between R50 and R70. "These girls are coming from around the country. Some from Soweto and they are so small and they parents don't know that their girls are here. When they are here they are being used by men," said Hawks head Lieutenant General Berning Ntlemeza. "So it means it is a destruction – we are not going to have kids in this country if we are going to allow this. We are at war now."Police officers, who arrested four men, found drugs and pornographic material as they swept through the house collecting evidence. The young girls sat outside the house crying and comforting each other as they told of their capture and abuse. Their rescue came as part of the Hawks and SAPS' Operation Expose. Offices, houses and factories targeting Nigerian drug lords and human traffickers were raided in the operation. (picture show HAWKS invading the streets of Kempton park and every Nigerian owned shop) The operation has been to Durban and Sandton but authorities are yet to reveal the next raid will be. "We arrested a lot of people today – Boksburg and Kempton Park, this is the start. We are moving and we are going to deal with drugs in this country," said Ntlemeza |

Posted: 28 Jul 2016 07:01 AM PDT Sacked chairman of the House of Representatives committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has released a new statement indicting speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. According to Jibrin, Dogara fraudulently diverted a Federal government water project to his farm in Nasarawa state. Read his statement below Good morning fellow Nigerians, Everyday I will give additional allegation against Mr Speaker and the 3 others until the law catches up with them. Allegation no21 to MrSpeaker: why did you fraudulently divert a Fed Govt water project to your farm in Nasarawa and how are you funding the farm? When a new Speaker emerges and the other principal officers replaced, I will write to the presiding officers of both chambers to commence a radical internal reform in the entire NASS beyond budget to cover performance assessment, running cost and allowances, investigations etc If the reform so done on NASS is not made public latest by December, I shall take it up and lay before the general public even if I am alone The idea is to do a clean up, flush out corruption and corrupt members so that in 2019 only corrupt free people who want to serve will come in God Almighty knows I am not perfect but as I approach 40 years in September, I have always wondered what is it that I can live and die for... On one hand, I settled for aggressive rural agriculture with emphasis on migrating our farmers from subsistence to commercial farming but I woke up mid night yesterday to pray and SUDDENLY realized I have become AN ACCIDENTAL ACTIVIST. This is noble and there is NO GOING BACK! I am a product of the establishment but something in me has never been comfortable. Iam so glad that by September 9th my 40th birthday everybody would have known where I stand for the rest of my life; rural agriculture and fight against corruption especially in the NASS For those who keep saying why now should realize that for every situation like this to occur, there must be a trigger how ever it looks! |

Posted: 28 Jul 2016 06:47 AM PDT Family members of 14 death row prisoners wept and one was close to collapse after learning the largest mass killing of convicted drug felons in Indonesia would take place on Thursday night - 24 hours earlier than expected Lawyers and embassy staff were also grim-faced as they emerged from the prosecutor's office in Cilacap on Thursday after being informed the deaths of the eight Nigerians, including Titus Igwe, four Indonesians, one Indian and one Pakistani were just hours away. The executions were proceeding despite nine of the condemned filing last-minute clemency pleas and pressure to postpone the executions amid growing evidence that "This is just insane, it should be tomorrow," said the director of the Community Legal Aid Institute, Ricky Gunawan, who was filing clemency pleas on behalf of Indonesian woman Merri Utami and Nigerian Humphrey Jefferson Ejike Eleweke.Human rights lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis said at least three of those facing the firing squad - Mr Eleweke, Ms Utami and Pakistani textile worker Zulfiqar Ali - may have received wrongful judgments. "In the name of justice, they deserve a retrial," Dr Mulya said. He said many had not lodged clemency pleas until the 11th hour because that would be to admit guilt and they insisted they were innocent. This third round of executions is the largest number of people ever executed in Indonesia's history - it's unprecedented," Dr Mulya said. The sister-in-law of Michael Titus Igweh,(pictured in veil holding up a family statement condemning the execution) who alleged police had applied electricity to his genitals to force him to confess to heroin possession, said his final request had been to see his wife and family for the last time. However she said Mr Igweh's wife was in Nigeria and would not arrive in Indonesia until Friday - hours after her husband was killed. "Yesterday I met Titus and he was angry and upset," Nila said. "He said: 'What kind of justice is this? What kind of country is Indonesia?"Nila said she had chosen to sacrifice her last-ever visit to Mr Igweh in order to tell his story to the media: "At this time I believe there are two things that can help Titus, one is God and one is the media. If that was the last time to see Titus, than so be it."On Thursday morning 17 ambulances - 14 containing coffins - were ferried to Nusakambangan, known as Indonesia's Alcatraz, where the prisoners will be strapped to wooden posts and shot dead by a firing squad. Police leaked grisly details leaked to the media by Police about the logistics of executions, including the size of the coffins, which were as long as 190 centimetres for some of the Africans. They said 198 executioners would be deployed, 140 guards, 70 equipment personnel and a 16-person sterilisation team. Each convict would require chains, a padlock, white aprons, a head cover, a pole, a chair, a marking sticker, a plastic bag for their belongings and scissors. Meanwhile, Catholic priest in Cilap confirms he will visit 3 Nigerian prisoners ahead of their execution, according to Indonesia bureau chief for ABC, Samantha Hawley. More photos...
